The Fostoria Glass Company

Updated April 2006 | By Matthew Christopher
The Fostoria Glass Company, founded in 1887, relocated to this factory in 1892 and became one of the "most prolific and versatile" producers of glass. Fostoria produced stemware, lamps, etched and blown pressed wares, entire crystal dinner services, and even supplied presidents from Eisenhower through Reagan with glass products bearing the official government seal. Closed in 1986, this amazing site has since been demolished.
Even though we arrived later in the day than I would have liked and had a limited amount of light left to explore the enormous factory, photographing Fostoria was an amazing experience. While large sections of the building were already partly demolished, the spaces that remained were very decayed and full of conveyors and kilns, and almost untouched by vandals. I was really looking forward to returning after I got a better camera, but when I did the site had been leveled. This has always haunted me, as i wish I could have done a better job and spent more time documenting what was once such a vast and prestigious part of the area's industry.
