i'm in the depths of winter yet again
icy wind's whispers displacing the summer sun's shout
the chill settles deeper than God could ever intend
yet i'm colder within than without.

without answers or reasons the snow falls around
without an apology the fickle sun hides
on a whim this short-tempered season freezes the ground
yet i'm to explain why i feel this inside?

inside i'm subarctic, like i've always been
inside i'm remote as the barren south pole,
inside i'm ice floes and glaciers that man's never seen
winter and i share the same frigid soul.
