Vincent Campbell Center*

Updated October 2006 | By Matthew Christopher

Built in 1907 as one of the first state funded tuberculosis sanatoriums, the Vincent Campbell Center later became a state hospital and finally a reform school for boys. Several buildings on campus are still being used in this capacity to treat teenage males who have committed violent crimes including arson, kidnapping, rape, and murder.

The Vincent Campbell Center is located on an active juvenile detention facility's campus. With the portion of the campus that is still in use nearby, entry needed to be swift and quiet. Once we were in the building though, we had a relatively uneventful afternoon of taking pictures, and reading through discarded letters people had written to their sons who were imprisoned there for crimes one could only guess at.

Please note that the true name of this location has not been disclosed to prevent theft, vandalism, and arson. Abandoned buildings are vulnerable and I do not want my work contributing to their decline.
