Advent Hill Baptist Church*

Updated April 2011 | By Matthew Christopher

Little information exists about Advent Hill Baptist Church prior to its closure. One can infer that when the economy of the small town it is located in imploded and the population consequently declined that the congregation decreased until keeping the church open was no longer possible. The newest literature found in the site was from 1986, which is roughly in line with the town's history and the state of decay in the building.

Bought by out of town property speculators, the church joined a list of sites that they hoped to sell to developers to revitalize the area. As with many such stories the 'potential' of the area and the hope for money blinded the owners to the reality of the town's condition and their asking prices fall more out of sync with the market each passing year as the deterioration of their structures progresses. Now essentially worthless in terms of market value, the church and the other properties like it are a source of aggravation for the townspeople as they cannot be sold, rehabilitated, or torn down, further depressing property values and driving out more residents - a downward spiral that will at this point most likely require obliterating the remains of the town's proud past and since the money to restore it does not appear to be on its way.

Please note that the true name of this location has not been disclosed to prevent theft, vandalism, and arson. Abandoned buildings are vulnerable and I do not want my work contributing to their decline.
