Photograph taken in Stoverdale, PA by Matthew Christopher of Abandoned America.

Hidden away behind a new McMansion development, the abandoned neighborhood of Stoverdale was one of the oldest in Derry township. The original Christian camping community in the area, a divide in its members led to the foundation of Mt. Gretna when there was a schism over whether or not to sell peanuts on Sundays among other things. When people started living there permanently, there was a row over the condition of the lower income houses and, more to the point, the fact that they existed at all in the otherwise fairly wealthy area. Slowly but surely the township supervisors choked off the community until it stood empty but for one or two houses. The original buildings were demolished in 2009 to make way for more high priced housing, and almost nothing remains of the site today.
